In recent years, Jewish communities across the globe—and particularly in the United Kingdom—have faced a troubling surge in antisemitism. This rise has been exacerbated by international events, such as the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and by decisions from global institutions like the United Nations, which many feel single out Israel and, by extension, Jewish people. In this climate, it is more important than ever for the wider Jewish community in the UK to celebrate their identity with pride, while also taking steps to ensure their safety and well-being.

The Unique Scrutiny of Israel and the Jewish People

A persistent theme in global discourse is the way Israel are treated differently from other nations and peoples. When Israel takes defensive actions in response to attacks, these actions are often portrayed in the media and by international organizations in a way that is far more critical than similar actions taken by other countries. Media coverage frequently omits crucial context, such as the history of violence against the Jewish community and the existential threats faced by Israel, and instead frames Israeli’s actions as aggressive or disproportionate. This double standard is not just a matter of perception. It has real-world consequences, fuelling antisemitism and making our community feel isolated and unfairly judged for supporting or identifying with Israel. The sense that we are the only people degraded and attacked for defending themselves and their homeland is a powerful and painful reality for many in the community.

Celebrating Jewish Identity with Pride and Safety

Despite these challenges, Jewish life in the UK remains vibrant and resilient. Annual events such as the UK Jewish Film Festival and Jewish Culture and Heritage Days provide opportunities for us to come together, share stories, and express our identity with pride. We are also fortunate that we are given the opportunities in Birmingham and online to attend regular events that celebrate our history, culture and resilience in the modern world, such as the upcoming talks from Imri Bunim and Shahar Horovitz.

Practical Steps for Safe and Proud Celebration

Engage with Community Organizations: Participating in events at Jewish community centres and joining local initiatives can provide both a sense of security and a platform for cultural expression. You can also join online communities such as Smashing Life – A community for Jewish women.

Promote Education and Awareness: Sharing personal stories and educating others about Jewish history and culture can help combat ignorance and reduce prejudice.  Visiting important sites and encouraging others to is a great way to spread your knowledge.

Foster Solidarity and Resilience: The Jewish community in the UK has responded to rising antisemitism with resilience and defiance, coming together to defend their heritage and support one another. This collective resilience is a powerful antidote to hate.

Support and Advocate for Israel: While it is important to acknowledge the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Jews should not be made to feel ashamed for supporting Israel’s right to exist and defend itself. Advocacy and education can help counteract biased narratives and promote a more balanced understanding of the issues.

In a world where antisemitism is on the rise and international institutions sometimes appear to single out Israel and the Jewish people for criticism, it is more important than ever for us to celebrate our identity with pride. The challenges are real, but so too is the resilience and vibrancy of Jewish life in the UK.
